An address in the protected Old Town cannot be built, only restored.

The burgher house at Zámočnícka 9 dates to medieval Bratislava: a Gothic core, with Renaissance and Baroque layers added over the centuries. Walls up to a metre thick keep each residence quiet, cool and still.

Zámočnícka has been a craftsmen's quarter since the Middle Ages. A freehold address like this rarely reaches the market in the Old Town.

The Story

Seven hundred years on the Street of the Craftsmen.

Zámočnícka began as a lane along the medieval ramparts and grew into one of the most storied streets of the Old Town. This is the ground the house has stood on.

Zámočnícka around 1900: the cobbled lane with a horse and carriage, in front of the house before its restoration
Zámočnícka · circa 1900

The same doorway, the same cobbles. More than a century ago a horse and carriage waits on Zámočnícka, in front of the very house that still stands at No. 9.

13th-14th c.The walled town

A lane along the ramparts

Medieval Pressburg grows into a fortified river port of the Kingdom of Hungary. Stone walls, towers and gates enclose the town, and a narrow lane takes shape running along the inside of the ramparts.

15th centuryThe craftsmen

The locksmiths give the street its name

Master locksmiths and blacksmiths build their houses and workshops along the wall. The street becomes Zámočnícka, the Street of the Craftsmen, a centre of metal craft at the heart of the city.

before 1520The neighbour

The Powder Bastion rises next door

The Prašná bašta, one of only two bastions of the city fortifications still standing today, is raised in the moat directly beside the house at No. 9. It remains the building's immediate neighbour.

1536The coronation city

A capital a few steps away

Pressburg becomes the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary and its coronation city. Over the next three centuries, eleven kings and queens are crowned minutes from this door, at St Martin's Cathedral.

16th-18th c.Gothic to Baroque

A burgher house of many layers

The house grows from its Gothic core, enriched over the centuries with Renaissance and Baroque detail. Close by, the Red Crayfish, among the oldest pharmacies in the city, opens its doors.

2023-2026The restoration

Restored for a new century

The 2023-2026 reconstruction renewed the facade, foundations, roof and every system, created eleven residences, and left seven centuries of history standing.
